Obesity and Gut Microbiomes
A study published in Nature this week marks another level gained in understanding the connection between obesity and the gut microbiome (the collection of living bacteria that populates our digestive system). The most recent in a series of studies coming out of Yale University, the experiment identified higher levels of acetate as triggering insulin secretion in mouse brains, the result of which was an increase in observed metabolic syndrome and obesity.
The practical applications of this research may not make their way to human populations any time soon, but it is a fascinating series of experiments.
